How the calculation works
The basic formula is current spool weight − empty spool weight = estimated filament remaining. If your loaded spool weighs 735 g and the empty spool weighs 250 g, the estimate is 485 g of filament remaining.
Why empty spool weight matters
Spools from different manufacturers—and sometimes different spool designs from the same manufacturer—can have different tare weights. A known empty spool from the same product line is the best reference. Makeratory only offers preset values when the source is shown.

What if you do not know the tare weight?
The best option is an empty spool from the same manufacturer and spool design. If you use a reference value, treat the answer as an estimate because manufacturers can change spool construction over time and two visually similar spools may not weigh exactly the same.
Is weighing filament exact?
No. Manufacturing tolerances, labels, cardboard moisture, desiccant, clips, and scale accuracy can all affect the result. Treat the number as an inventory estimate rather than laboratory measurement. For production planning, leaving a small safety buffer can reduce the risk of planning right to the measured limit.
Turn remaining grams into useful inventory information
Knowing that a spool contains about 485 g is more useful when that number stays connected to the spool's brand, material, color, storage location, and cost. That is the point where a simple calculation becomes an inventory workflow.
